Today, the need for innovative solutions to achieve sustainable development goals has become more urgent than ever. However, while implementing these solutions, it has become inevitable to face challenges related to intellectual property rights. The United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Accelerator Labs Network plays a crucial role in overcoming these challenges, yet struggles with the complexities of intellectual property rights

Established in 2019, the UNDP Accelerator Labs Network is an initiative aimed at developing and implementing innovative solutions to achieve sustainable development goals. Throughout the Network's four-phase working model, the management of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) has emerged as a significant challenge when it comes to the investment and scaling of solutions. Existing systems can become complex and obstructive when intersecting with IPR.

In this context, UNDP collaborated with the Center for Music Ecosystems (CME) to examine the existing IPR structure within the UNDP Accelerator Labs Network and reached findings inspired by other sectors in IPR management. This research presents a series of recommendations that challenge the current IPR structure within the organization, strive to optimize benefits, and promote collaboration with all relevant stakeholders (UN agencies, governments, Accelerator Labs, grassroots innovators, startups, universities, etc.).

Current Challenges

The current IPR management system makes it difficult to invest in and scale the solutions developed by the Accelerator Labs. Complexity and bureaucracy hinder the progress of innovative ideas and lead to delays in achieving sustainable development goals.

Proposed Solutions

The research proposes a series of solutions that challenge the current IPR structure and optimize benefits:

●     Simplified IPR Management: A transparent and user-friendly IPR management system should be established to replace complex and bureaucratic procedures.

●     Collaboration with Stakeholders: All relevant stakeholders should be included in the decision-making processes regarding IPR management.

●     Flexibility and Adaptability: A flexible and adaptable IPR framework should be developed to meet the needs of different solutions and contexts.

●     Capacity Building: The Accelerator Labs and relevant stakeholders should be trained and their capacities strengthened in IPR management.

●     Knowledge Sharing: Best practices and experiences in IPR management should be shared across the entire Network.

Models Inspired by the Music Industry

IPR management models in the music industry can serve as a source of inspiration for the UNDP Accelerator Labs Network. For example, open licensing models can enable innovative solutions to reach and be adopted by a wider audience.

Examples from the UN System

There are various examples of IPR management within the UN System. These examples can provide valuable lessons for the UNDP Accelerator Labs Network.

Conclusion

IPR management is crucial for the success of the UNDP Accelerator Labs Network. Overcoming challenges in the current system and developing a more effective IPR management framework will significantly advance efforts to achieve sustainable development goals.
