The "Türkiye Report on IP-Backed Financing", prepared in collaboration between the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), was introduced in an online launch event. The event was attended by TÜRKPATENT President Prof. Dr. Zeki Durak and WIPO TDC Director Prof. Dr. Habip Asan.
Speaking at the event, TÜRKPATENT President Prof. Dr. Zeki Durak emphasized the critical role of intellectual property rights (IPRs) in creating economic value. He highlighted Türkiye’s efforts to develop its IP ecosystem through reforms aligned with international standards and the importance of taking progressive steps in this field.
The report sheds light on the current state of using intellectual property as a financial instrument in Türkiye. It focuses particularly on the challenges faced by SMEs in accessing financing and the potential role of intellectual property in addressing these issues.
According to the report, while it is legally possible to use IPRs as collateral in Türkiye, the practice is not yet widespread. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of standardized approaches to valuing IPRs. The uncertainty in valuation poses a significant barrier for financial institutions to accept these assets as collateral. TÜRKPATENT aims to overcome these challenges through initiatives such as TÜRKSMD, which supports IP valuation and commercialization processes while developing new solutions.
The report also highlights Türkiye’s strategic plans and international cooperation efforts to establish mechanisms for IP-backed financing. Collaborative projects with institutions such as the Credit Guarantee Fund (KGF) aim to provide entrepreneurs with access to loans by leveraging innovative projects and outputs.
Türkiye’s innovative approaches in this field hold great potential to set an example not only nationally but also internationally for transforming intellectual property rights into financial instruments.
